...might be expected of one of his country's sharpest players of bridge, China's shrewd Vice Premier Teng Hsiao-p'ing has been leading from a strong hand in the continuing jockeying for top power in Peking. Although last month he did not, as some China watchers speculated, replace Party Boss Hua Kuo-feng as China's Premier at the National People's Congress, Teng has in other ways been picking up trick after trick. He has gradually eliminated political opponents who shunted him into obscurity in the tumultuous Cultural Revolution, and bolstered those...
...audience "to pay tribute to Scottie Templeton," who is celebrating his 51st birthday and has just emerged from successful cancer treatments in the hospital. At first these interludes seem irritating and gratuitous, as though Slade were trying to disguise a one-set, chronologically ordered comedy by Pirandello-ing it up a bit. But afterwards, you can appreciate how these anecdotes should have worked: this is a tribute to Scottie's life, and yet each speaker can only talk of his outrageous practical jokes, his flair for improvising great comic routines in public, or the way he has clowned himself...

There is one infectious sequence in a sound studio where a record producer (played by real-life Record Producer Richard Perry) flamboyantly reshapes a lame rock song into a hit; there's also a surprisingly touch ing scene in which the president of the Buddy Holly Fan Club (well acted by Moosie Drier, 13) tells Freed of his sorrow over Holly's death. Such isolated moments do not bring American Hot Wax to a crescendo, but no one can accuse Mutrux of ever losing the film...
Political rivalries may well remain at the top of the hierarchy. Many officials rocketed to prominence during the Cultural Revolution (among them: Secret Police Chief Wang Tung-hsing, Peking Mayor Wu Teh and even Chairman Hua), while others (like Teng Hsiao-p'ing) were purged. In the long run, and despite the talk in Peking of a "united front," there remains a possibility that a new power struggle will erupt between Hua's supporters and Teng's veteran technocrats...
