...teacher trying to put a dispassionate face on a passionate nature. And Dennis Hopper brings some fresh, forceful observation and a jittery melancholy to his characterization of a onetime star athlete who has become the town drunk. There is a quirky authenticity about these figures, and the landscape they inhabit, that one does not expect to find in movies whose chief business is to warm the heart, not to inform it. Hoosiers may not transcend the banality of its story line, but it does take its shot. And comes close to making the movie equivalent of a three-point play...
...McGuire, claims he "always thought the play could have been about truck drivers. You would still have the natural leader, the clown, the one who is quietly loyal, the one who knows that the best of himself will never be expressed." Truck drivers would not talk so gracefully or inhabit a world in which verbal violence is commonplace and bursts of physical violence so shocking. ...Honduran tropics. O-Zone, Theroux's first venture into science fiction, is also a survival story. In the film's first half, the edgy romantic comedy is beguiling, especially as played by Goldblum and Davis, two deft charmers who inhabit their roles as if they have comfortably lived there forever. The Faustian tragedy of the second half is underscored by some revolting and riveting special effects. Watch closely for Brundlefly's agile wall climbing. Close your eyes during the hallucinatory sequence in which Cronenberg, as an obstetrician, helps Veronica give birth to a 20-in.-long bouncing baby...
...from the grip of death, cleansed, made new. A "movement" without politics or program, we were defined largely by our shared lives on the campus--millions of us getting stoned and listening to the Beatles--and by our opposition to the war. Now that war is over, and we inhabit private worlds...
