Remaining Small. Under retiring President Detlev ("Del") W. Bronk, 70, the research center became a university as well. To inject "the vitality of youth that students bring," Physiologist Bronk set up a small graduate school in 1954, a year after he became president; in 1965 he had Rockefeller retitled from an institute to a university. Resisting the expansionist impulse, Bronk has insisted that R.U. remain small in order to concentrate on "areas where we can really excel." As a result, R.U. "appoints" no more than 30 new students a year out of the 170 candidates recommended for admission by scholars...

...Colombia, the Texaco-Gulf project is a chance to inject much-needed income into the economy while easing its dependence on coffee, which currently accounts for 60% of the country's export earnings. For the two companies, which decline to estimate the total value of the Putumayo find, the project may initiate a far-ranging cooperative exploratory effort. Swinging Group. As with all grand designs, execution is far more difficult than enunciation. The necessity to check spending, for instance, will inhibit proposals for expensive new federal activities. But some White House aides believe that there are other ways to inject new interest into the old Great Society pitch.
