Environmentalists too are worried about the unknown, particularly about the effect of heavily saline discharges into inland California waters. After the spraying ceased, the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) conducted an investigation of the environmental and human costs of Agent Orange. NAS found that the Army sprayed more than 10 per cent of the inland forests, 36 per cent of the mangrove forests, and 3 per cent of cultivated land with Agent Orange.
