Shipbuilders are now trying to speed things up by building vessels designed to carry loaded barges across the ocean. The idea is to bypass completely the crowded docks at deepwater ports. Cargo would be loaded on the barges at an inland U.S. river port and unloaded at another-which could be on a U.S. river system or in Europe or Asia. The arrangement is an outgrowth of the trend toward shipping goods overseas in factory-loaded containers. It overcomes several drawbacks inherent in containers, however, notably their need for costly special dock facilities...
America's only subtropical national park is a multitude of habitats-inland pine sloughs, vast saw grass savannahs, hardwood hammocks and coastal mangroves with myriad islands and canals. It is a refuge of 22 endangered species, including the bald eagle, osprey, snowy egret, Florida panther and alligator. Each year, more than a million visitors peer from trails and catwalks at the antics of exotic herons, bitterns and roseate spoonbills. They are mystified by the anhinga, a prehistoric bird that must spread and dry its wings after diving for fish, or drown from lack of natural-body-oil protection...

Some bankers and businessmen fear that the Government's tough policy may tip the economy into a recession -or worse...

With the Boys. Leo Heroux, a Rhode Islander, first saw Omaha on June 6, 1944, as a 19-year-old G.I. with the 5th Special Engineer Brigade. Later that day, when the U.S. attack had punched inland, a friendly farmer gave him a drink of milk and Heroux met the man's pretty daughter. They were married after the war and returned to Normandy to live. Heroux has four children now and runs a driving school with his father-in-law. Every June 6, he closes his office and wanders down barren Omaha Beach to "walk over the sand...
