...become two stable democratic states, then the fact that we are not a large state is not a tragedy. If the breakup of our common state should lead to inner instability, chaos, poverty and suffering, then it would start to become a tragedy. The fact in itself that two states shall emerge out of one is not a tragedy. I do not feel any sentimental ties to the Czechoslovak state. I do not place the highest value on the state, but rather on man and humanity...
...quite relieved, almost happy actually, because always when I accomplish something or make an important decision, spurring others to act rather than reacting only to what is happening around me, it gives me a feeling of inner freedom and self-confirmation. And everyone needs such self- confirmation. It is one of the paradoxes of my life that I am experiencing such a creative feeling at the moment of my resignation...
Gerald Levin, Time Warner president and co-chief executive officer, said the firm would not pull the album, which he described as "depicting the despair and anger that hang in the air of every American inner city, not advocating attacks on police." He said Time Warner would sponsor a TV forum for artists, law-enforcement officials and others to discuss such topics as racism and free speech. The title character, apparently deaf and blind from boyhood, is in fact rendered autistic by seeing his father shoot his mother's lover -- an infidelity made less sordid by the fact that the father, a World...
...absurd to discuss Cop Killer as part of the "confrontation of ideas" -- or even as an authentic anguished cry of rage from the ghetto. Cop Killer is a cynical commercial concoction, designed to titillate its audience with imagery of violence. It merely exploits the authentic anguish of the inner city for further titillation. Tracy Marrow is in business for a buck, just like Time Warner. Cop Killer is an excellent joke on the white establishment, of which the company's anguished apologia ("Why can't we hear what rap is trying to tell us?") is the punch line...
