About sixty men came out for baseball practice yesterday. The preliminary work was much the same as that of the day before, but after a little warming up the men were divided into different nines. Three two-inning games were played. The play was sharp and spirited, and while the batting was very weak, the fielding was excellent. Of the pitchers, P. N. Coburn '02, made the best showing. He had speed and very fair control, striking out men in every inning which he pitched. Of the new men, F. Jacques '03, caught well behind the bat, and made...
When Woodworth was substituted for Sedgwick in the eighth inning, Sears made a home run over the centre field fence, McCornick and Hayes doubles, and Laughlin a three bagger, before the first man had been put out. Further scoring was prevented by a double play by Bacon, Fultz and F. Croker. In the ninth, Robinson and Sears singled, and though the next two men struck out, a combination of errors and Laughlin's second triple scored Harvard's last runs...
Carter, who pitched throughout the game for Exeter, was found for eleven hits. Stephenson, on the other hand, allowed but one double and two singles. Two of these hits, however, came in the second inning, and with a misdirected throw, helped Exeter to score her two runs. Andover's misplays were less costly than those of Exeter, nearly all of which were made with men on bases. Matthews, at shortstop, played a sharp fielding game for Andover, and assisted Quinby and Chapman in the only double play...
...Varsity nine will play its second game with the University of Pennsylvania, this afternoon on Soldiers Field. The game will be called at 3 o'clock. Pennsylvania won the first game by the score of 3 to 2 in the tenth inning. This afternoon the Harvard nine will be weakened by the loss of Rand. As McCornick will probably be unable to play on account of illness, Chandler will again play in right field...
Fitz pitched the first three innings and was doing well when Hayes took his place. Hayes pitched three innings and was found for four hits, up to the seventh inning when Haughton was substituted for him and finished the game. At no time was Harvard's fielding anything brilliant, with the possible exception of a long foul which Robinson managed to reach. For the Graduates, W. Clarkson of the Cambridge High School, who was played in place of Abbott, put up an excellent game at third, making an especially brilliant catch of a long foul in the ninth inning...
