...hardly any issue that deserves more attention. Of primary importance is making the problem visible. Thank you for giving us the example of rock stars, philanthropists, doctors and activists who are fighting a battle that seems impossible to win. That truly is journalism that makes a difference. Sheela Braganca Innsbruck, Austria Highlighting the unique alliance of Bono and Bill and Melinda Gates will bring new hope for solving the global health crisis. ...cortex, in which the so-called executive functions like attention, task management and concentration are located. This is consistent with what the Austrian scientists reported last month at the Radiological Society of America's annual conference in Chicago. Dr. Florian Koppelstaetter and his colleagues at the Medical University in Innsbruck gave 15 male volunteers 100 mg each of caffeine?about the same amount as in two cups of coffee?and then tested their short-term memory. Last October Régine Cavagnoud, who won the super-G World Cup in 2001 and was third overall in the World Cup standings, died in a freak training accident on the Pitztal glacier, near Innsbruck. During a joint French and German team-practice session, the 31-year-old Cavagnoud was speeding down the ice at around 65 km/h when she crashed into German coach Markus Anwander. Both sustained head injuries, and Cavagnoud went into cardiac arrest. Two days later she died. Germany's World combined champion Martina Ertl spoke for many of her fellow competitors when she said, "This...
