Police and College officials were prompted to take action by a string of break-ins in Matthews Hall, in which a bicycle, jewelry and several wallets were allegedly stolen.
"Since the Galleria came in, there has been a lot of trouble," says longtime East Cambridge resident Charlie Watson, who lives on nearby Cambridge Street. "This used to be the safest part of the city. Now there are break-ins and handbag snatches."
On campuses across the nation, student groups--through a combination of rallies, hunger strikes and sir-ins--have succeeded in convincing administrations to implement ethnic studies curricula.
But we wonder how Knowles determines that demand. About 200 people attended a panel debating the merits of ethnic studies on April 10, and more than 100 people rallied in favor of ethnic studies outside University Hall a week later, showing that many students do want courses in ethnic studies...
