...film contains a rather guarded performance by Alan Bates as Diaghilev and an ill-considered one by Leslie Browne, the young ballerina in Director Ross's The Turning Point. She is here both glum and insipid as she pursues not an ambition but a man. A young dancer from the American Ballet Theater, George de la Pena, acts the part of Nijinsky quite effectively. There is a certain ineluctable spirit about him. But of his dancing, strangely, nothing at all can be said: Ross never permits him to per form a complete sequence of a ballet. In one instance...
...have only touched on how worthless this album is, how insipid and unprofessional. B-52s drop things, and cows drop things too, which because they are loose and watery become flat and circular and, in the winter, hard and very much like a record. Get yourself a wig and an electric guitar. In America anything is possible...
...guess. You ran the insipid article on the chicken flying contest [July 2] just to see if anyone was reading American Scene. Well I read it, and I find chicken flying in the same category as fox clubbing, dog fighting, cock righting and rattlesnake throwing...
...Dudley House production would be more aptly titled The Bar Mitzvah Party. Ben Schatz creates an Alceste who is petulant, insipid and obnoxious. But this attempt at satire fails because many of Schulman's other numbers are as insipid as those chorus bits he tries to satirize. Unless he has a specific objective--for example, to parody a '50s song as he does in "Mummy Knows Best"--his tunes slide into something reminiscent of a Burt Bacharach medley. The satire in the book, like the satire...
