...legal semantics matter. If the State Department labels a coup "military" - the most brutal and anti-democratic kind of overthrow - it automatically triggers a suspension of all non-humanitarian and non-democracy-related U.S. aid. In the case of Honduras, State Department officials insist that those measures have already been taken without the military-coup tag. But critics, who fear Obama is keeping the Honduras coup designation downgraded to mollify conservative Republicans, argue that further steps, like freezing Honduran bank accounts in the U.S., are still available to the Administration. That point was often raised Thursday night further north on Florida's Gulf Coast, in Tampa. There, as a result, the Hillsborough County School Board ruled at a meeting that it would allow the speech. Dean and other speech opponents insist the Administration has not given educators an advance look at it, but Hillsborough schools superintendent Mary Ellen Elia announced that she and board members had indeed seen it and concluded that it conveys a healthy, nonpartisan message. Said Democratic board member Doretha Edgecomb: "It's a message that a lot of Presidents have given before." But some members complained...

Chrysler executives insist that their numbers were not as bad as they appear. "Chrysler Group's large-car, minivan, crossover and truck segments all posted increases in retail sales in August," says Steven Beahm, vice president of sales operations, adding that Chrysler now has a 28-day supply of vehicles on dealer lots, the lowest figure in decades. Beahm also notes that Chrysler's truck, van and Jeep sales have been relatively stable. Of course, that's a far cry from what's needed most right now - sales growth. And new products designed with help from Fiat won't arrive...

...year for most South Florida homes, will rise 10% a year for the next three years (vital, officials claim, for handling claims from the next big storm). And their public utility, Florida Power & Light (FPL), is lobbying the state for a 30% rate hike (vital, FPL execs insist, for upgrading infrastructure). "It all seems out of control to people here at the time when they can least absorb it," says Dr. Jose Valladares, president of the conservative Fair Property Tax for All in Miami-Dade. ...widely accepted diagnostic criteria exist to identify Stockholm syndrome - also known as terror-bonding or traumatic bonding - and critics insist its apparent prevalence is largely a figment of the media's overactive imagination. One FBI report called such close victim-captor relationships "overemphasized, overanalyzed, overpsychologized and overpublicized." Nonetheless, the Swedish clerks' puzzling response to their ordeal has been emulated over and over again in a series of high-profile cases. When heiress Patty Hearst was abducted by the Symbionese Liberation Army in 1974, for example, she famously became their accomplice, adopting an assumed name and abetting the radical political group...
