Perhaps the best argument against the death penalty--insofar as it is the most palatable--is that human beings cannot impose it with consistency or rationality. If retribution must be precise, you may forfeit your own life when you take someone else's. But we have no way of imposing such a system equitably or sensible. We should follow similar reasoning as that expounded by the creators of American government, and impose a single check and balance on ourselves: categorical proscription of the death penalty...

In fact, from the looks of things, one could easily get the impression that everyone at Harvard celebrates Christmas. Which, at least insofar as I can tell and as the admissions committee claims, is not the case. So why do Christmas trees decorate the houses to the complete exclusion of other religious symbols...

There is a certain hypocrisy to the "Cops in Shops" program insofar as that before Scott Krueger's death, allocating valuable police resources to bust first years for buying a couple of 12-packs was not a priority for the Cambridge Police Department. And it should not be now. However, it is the staff that is being underhanded here, by pretending that it has logistical problems with the program when all it really wants is the right to buy booze illegally...
