...philosophy embodied this conflict and, in a sense, mastered it. He could invest himself with religious charisma by using the traditions of American fundamentalist theology: faith healing, apocalyptic exhortations, visions of the promised land. But he could also provide his followers with a forceful rationalization: his church was an instrument of social revolution. The follower was to prove his convictions the old way--tithe and then some...
...your head, can you name two or three of the world's greatest bassoon players? Nor can I: the unfortunate bassoon has in recent times been much neglected as a solo instrument. David Sogg's performance of Mozart's B flat major concerto, K. 191, showed that this neglect is unwarranted, while providing a welcome respite for a musical world saturated with concerti for piano or for violin. It is unfortunate that more people did not take advantage of this nearly unique opportunity to hear an excellent bassoonist in a solo context...
These qualities that make Mozart so universally appealing are also responsible for his difficulty to perform. Happily, though, David Sogg is an extraordinarily gifted musician. And they are shadowed by glimpses of enemies: Antichrist, Gog and Magog; paranoia is often a cult's principal instrument of discipline. Even in 1978, one catches whiffs of an old dementia and witchfire...
Following the release of its first probe, the Pioneer Venus 2 spacecraft this week was scheduled to toss off three additional instrument-crammed packages. The four probes, as well as the mother ship, will arrive at Venus on Dec. 9. All five are aimed to descend over different areas of the planet, so that they will gather the widest possible range of data, including temperatures, composition, density and distribution of the atmosphere. They will be passing through hostile territory. At higher altitudes the probes will be whipped by winds with velocities that may be as high...
