...tools is providing astronomers with unprecedented opportunities. What should also be emphasized is the way ground- and space-based telescopes work together. Far from being just a finder telescope for the Keck, as the piece suggested, the amazing Hubble Space Telescope--arguably the most productive astronomical instrument ever--has been a wellspring for investigations with ground-based telescopes. Indeed, collaboration with the Hubble and other space telescopes, such as the orbiting Chandra and the Space Infrared Telescope Facility, has been a rationale for building these new ground-based telescopes. ...vocals on the Jayhawks' recent albums, both Johnson and drummer Tim O'Reagan contributed lead vocals onstage. O'Reagan's version of Charlie Rich's "Life Has Its Little Ups and Downs" was an excellent, soulful showcase of the band's new vocal lineup. The band's instrument work was equally superb. Herby Wallace, Doug Jernigan and Joe Wright, accompanied by bass and drums, tear into a set that ranges from "Sweet Georgia Brown" to the bluegrass standard "Rocky Top" (featuring a scorching ride by Jernigan) to "Johnny B. Goode." As is not always the case with highly technical instrumental displays (think jazz fusion), some actual music is being played here, and very well...
...occurs to me that in this quixotic adventure, I'm following those same currents of refined obsession, trying to claim a small, evanescent patch of the American fantasy. The maverick creative spirit that animated Henry Ford and Les Paul and Elvis is fully manifest in this impossible instrument, which is as crazy and American as it gets...
