...speech of Patrick Cardinal Hayes, Archbishop of New York: ". . . By such sin fell empires, states and nations. Religion shudders at the wild orgy of immorality the situation forebodes. . . . Birth control is heralded because the poor . . . are largely responsible for defectives. Never was there cast . . . a more offensive insult. Defectives, physical or mental, have immortal souls, redeemed by the blood of Christ. The forces of evil . . . would exploit the bodies and ruin the souls of the children of God." (TIME...

...TIME representative I have for five years stressed your fairness, omniscience. Your article on dirty Buchmanites (May 28) is utterly unfair, strangely ignorant; your quotation from a "Princeton song" a gratuitous insult. Members of the First Century Christian Fellowship (the movement to which you no doubt refer) are not correctly called Buchmanites; there is no mystery about the Morning Watch-it consists of prayer, Bible reading, religious meditation; there is specifically Biblical authority for the stress laid on "confession" (James 5:16). But then your wise editorial head induces you to add, with just the faintest trace of insult, "But Toscanini is no Jew." Toscanini is not Jewish. What of it? Take away Toscanini, and whom have you left for a list of Gentile conductors, I ask you? Take away Toscanini, and whom have you among the Jews? I refer you to your own printed list, which includes all the conductors of note in America...
