...involved in the peace movement in the sixties in San Francisco and Berkeley, a movement that made Americans think again about the meaning of war and peace. Now I find myself faced with a struggle more personal and more frustratingly difficult than any before. I do not intend to minimize the struggle or pain of other groups, rather I ask all people of good will to join us in his endeavor to enlighten the Harvard community about the meaning of tolerance, diversity, and equal opportunity. It is difficult for lesbian and gay people these days to avoid the feeling that...

Does Conley realize just how injurious his actions were? Undoubtedly he intended some harm. But does he realize what a published character assassination--erroneously alleged, no less--can do to the assassinated? If he does not, let me say this: it is out of all proportion with anything even an evil person might intend. Having your personal life--let alone an inaccurate portrayal of your personal life--publicized against your wishes is a humiliation no one deserves (save, at this point, Conley). Then there are the rumored slights, both real and imagined: a woman believed to be a member of the White House staff refused to speak to a top aide of Joint Chiefs Chairman Colin Powell (true); Chelsea Clinton refused a military escort (false); Clinton does not intend to use Bethesda Naval Hospital (he has not yet made clear where he will seek medical care). "It's not any one thing that makes us distrust Clinton. It's the accumulation," says a Navy officer. "At a certain point, every little thing starts to be viewed as part...

...Democrats must also do their part. In their first nomination opportunity since Kennedy, the Democrats should resist the temptation to bend to the liberal interest groups who desire revenge via a left-wing choice. An overly qualified, centrist choice would indicate that Clinton does not intend to sink to the cynical level of his predecessors. Democrats in the Senate must not give in to pressure to apply an abortion litmus test to the nominee; they have to be ready to have legitimate disagreements with the nominee on matters of interpretation without throwing the judge out with the baby...
