Harpo's choices of plays for production are never haphazard. The choice of this play of Brecht's seems particularly sensitive. Harpo is committed to do plays as much the way they were written as possible. Director Laurence Senelick must then intend Drums in the Night primarily as a statement about Weimar Germany. I have no real way of knowing how well he succeeds. The play seems like what Weimar seems like, anomie everywhere, drunken revelry, heavy humor, recrimination and insecurity. Anna's super bourgeois parents, played by Martin Andrucki and Raye Bush, are convincing, and though they are without...
...they cannot bring themselves to build an adequate civilian defense system. It is a questionable complaint; U.S. deaths in a massive nuclear exchange, even in a well-sheltered nation, could approach 40 million-an unfathomable catastrophe for any society. But, in another sense-a sense Teller undoubtedly does not intend-the fatalistic terror about nuclear warfare may indeed be a vice. ...knew, but who pretends not to recognize him. It turns out that she too is a world famous scientist. The exposition deftly continues as we learn that these world-famous scientists have been assembled in order to save Metalluna from their arch-enemy. Swibberlex or something. However, the Aliens intend to submit the Earthlings to frontal lobotomies so that they will have no will of their own. Through a series of circumstances too embarrassing to relate, the scientist and the girl find themselves in a flying saucer heading towards Metalluna itself...
Mitchell's statement was close to a statement by Nixon last Thursday that students "shouldn't fear government repression because we intend no repression. We do not believe in repression. It is not a government policy...
...Tories will also forge ahead with promised labor legislation. They intend to press for laws to make industrial agreements legally binding and to require a 60-day cooling-off period in labor disputes affecting the national welfare. On the Isle of Man last week, delegates to the Confederation of Shipbuilding and Engineering Unions' convention warned against interference in industrial relations. "The unions," shouted one speaker, "will not be led like lambs to the slaughter!" A national dock strike set for July 14 could paralyze Britain's crucial export trade...
