...last Sunday's extra, Dr. Randolph Catlin Jr., the head of Harvard mental health services, said that Harvard's suicide rate was probably less than a larger university like Duke ("Stunned Dunster Resident Mourn Housemates," May 28, 1995). Catlin did not intend to imply that Duke has a suicide problem, as the University has not had an on-campus suicide in the past 10 years. Catlin apologizes for the error...

...predict even a year ago. John Kasich, the whirlwind of motion and emotion from Ohio who heads the House Budget Committee, repeatedly proclaims his work to be "a revolution." And for once that overworked clicha might be true. Consider two measures of how many decades of precedent the Republicans intend to reverse. This measure is perverse even by conservative standards. Instead of constraining police with the strict provisions of search warrants and the Fourth Amendment, a plea of "good faith" could excuse egregious behavior...

Yeltsin: Discussions have been going on about postponing or canceling the elections. Some say we need to ensure stability in this period of change. On the other hand, the opposition wants to destabilize the situation and cause people to distrust the government and is spreading rumors that the authorities intend to disrupt the elections. In my message to the Federation Council this year, I particularly emphasized the importance of holding elections at the times set by the Constitution. The executive branch will do everything to ensure this...
