...state and local governments, then the government already has the remedy: a progressive income tax. No clear social goal is advanced by a lawyer tax: Why would the government wish to discourage states and municipalities from hiring lawyers? Other specific taxes, such as on alcohol or tobacco, at least intend some social benefit beyond just adding revenue to the treasury. Absent an overriding social goal, to single out one group for confiscatory taxation would be a simple abuse of government power...

...Matt Rees: This is just another point on an extended Barak timeline. On February 6, right at the end of a rather long-winded concession speech, Barak said, more or less: "By the way, I intend to resign from the Labor party and the Knesset and take a break from political life." Recent cover stories in Wired and the New York Times Magazine tracked the efforts of the Raelians, a religious group committed to, among other things, welcoming the first extraterrestrials when they appear. ...funny," Dukakis told the Boston Globe. "You have to have a sense of humor in this business." Responded Nader: "I have done Saturday Night Live four times. Who says I don't have a sense of humor?" Dukakis tried to end things, noting, "Needless to say, I do not intend to do physical harm to brother Nader." Ralph? "The issue is that he said it, and it coarsened the dialogue." And that Dukakis-Nader ticket looked so promising...

The Sharon "security process" will probably aim to ink another interim accord and leave the issues that toppled Barak for much, much later. Says Gold: "To continue with the old diplomatic approach would be like hammering square pegs into round holes." Sharon might be forgiven for thinking...
