...Jong's larger project in Erica Jong on Henry Miller is to explain Miller's importance--and perhaps her own importance, by extension--to American literary history. Jong summarizes her intent at the end of a chapter titled "Why Must We Read Miller? Miller as Sage": "I want to send you back to read him--with an open head and heart." Unfortunately, though she makes some interesting claims (e.g. "Ultimately Miller can be a stronger force for feminism than for male chauvinism."), few heads and hearts will be opened by her critical commentary. ...those ubiquitous pieces touting the "real- life" story behind whatever fact-based TV movie is airing that evening. This month, for instance, local-news viewers have met the real-life policewomen who filed a sexual-harassment suit against the Long Beach, California, police department (CBS's With Hostile Intent); a real-life near victim of convicted murderer Blanche Taylor Moore (NBC's Black Widow Murders); and the real-life South Dakota woman who bore her daughter's baby (CBS's Labor of Love: The Arlette Schweitzer Story...

This mood music then gives...
...intent to make formal charges of nepotism. At the time I did not feel that this would bring a productive resolution to the situation. (Cf. the clarification on page four of today's paper). Rather, my intent in going to Dean Jewett was to convey my concern that the appearance of nepotism could cause great upset to the Dunster community. I felt that the appearance of nepotism had already become a divisive issue within the House, and that the presence of a brother as well as a grade-school friend of the Assistant Senior Tutor among the new candidates could...
