Whatever was behind the affair, Nasser seemed intent on using it to start a new hate campaign against the U.S. And just as things were looking up in relations between the two countries: in the wake of new aid negotiations, Nasser's minions had recently become chummy with Americans in Cairo. No longer. Last week the government-owned newspaper Al Gumhuria accused the CIA of plotting to overthrow Nasser "by any means, even assassination." Suddenly the heat was on again, and even the friendliest Egyptians found it inconvenient to join their old American friends for a quiet meal...
...confident," Commonwealth Relations Secretary Arthur Bottomley told Parliament in London last week, "that this will mark the beginning of a new and happy era in Anglo-Maldivian relations." But even that did not seem very likely. Rather than join the worldwide stampede of newly emerging nations, the Maldives seem intent on submerging. They are not going to join the Commonwealth. They have not applied for membership in the United Nations. Nor, apparently, will they seek diplomatic relations with any nation anywhere. The closest thing the Maldivians have to a foreign service, in fact, is a Male fish trader...
Power & Isotopes. A.M.F. and New York signed a letter of intent, under which the state's Atomic & Space Development Authority will put up $125,000 for the company to draw complete specifications for the free world's first nuclear-powered desalinization plant.* If the Atomic Energy Commission approves the reactor design as expected, New York will later scrape up $4,100,000. Building is to begin next April at Riverhead, N.Y., on the northeast shore of Long Island, and in 1968 the plant should start turning out fresh water...
...grim, tense business with the surgeon snapping 'Scalpel!' and 'Clamp!' and everything going along in dramatic silence except for the click, click of instruments. This is just a lot of hogwash. About half the time the surgeon is telling dirty jokes with the fixed intent of embarrassing the scrub nurse. The rest of the time there is bickering, or gossip, or talk about how things were last winter in Palm Springs, or how many suction cups on a squid's tentacles, or whether a woman has an orgasm at the instant she is hanged...
...FORZA DEL DESTINO (RCA Victor; 4 LPs). Schippers again, but without the imagination he gives to Macbeth. He just keeps things going along and lets his experienced performers (Leontyne Price, Richard Tucker, Giorgio Tozzi) take over. Price is at her very best. Her voice magnifies Verdi's intent and makes every hoary old aria sound as if it were written yesterday. Tucker at 50 gives every indication that he can go on singing forever-a cheering prospect. Only Tozzi is disappointing. His voice sounds dry, and he does the role of the padre like a priest droning through early...
