Tooby has apparently failed to realize that sociobiological theory not only treats inter-group behavioral differences as genetic, but argues that racism, sexism and xenophobia are the genetic reactions to these differences. It is no accident, then, that a racist organization like the National Front in England would seize upon sociobiology to explain why whites should attack blacks...

...blend in. (One hot seller: a Korean-made khaki jacket favored by militant students.) Tensions subsided when Khomeini ordered his countrymen not to harm foreigners, but President Carter's suggestion at midweek that force might be used put correspondents on the spot once again. Back at the Inter Continental Hotel, the informal headquarters for foreign journalists, several Americans conspicuously began sitting with West Germans in the dining room and learning the words to O Canada. Others sang new verses of an old seasonal favorite that was becoming the anthem of the Tehran press corps: Get Me Home for Christmas...

...former chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission, should really not have been surprised by the NRC's seeming indifference. As she must know only too well, waste disposal is one of those problems that nobody in Washington wants responsibility for. A variety of inter agency reports and meetings have addressed the problems, but most of them are gathering dust on agency shelves. When the panel finished its hearings, it unanimously recommended that the DOE set up regional low-level waste storage sites. The greatest problem, the panel found, is the risk taken when wastes are shipped clear across the country for burial. About eight months ago, the recommendation was sent to the White House for review. In keeping with a growing tradition, nothing has been done about the DOE study either--President Carter, his aides say, is still making...

The Chief Justice, or ''the Chief,'' as he is called, is primus inter pares-first among equals. At conference, the Chief begins the discussion of each case by describing the issues as well as his own views. Warren was known for declaring his opinions clearly and strongly at the outset, cutting through legalisms to ask persistently, ''Is it right? Is it fair?'' Burger is more tentative. Some of his colleagues wonder...
