...Despite the events in Georgia over the past week, it was business as usual between the U.S. and Russia on the Western front. The Bush Administration on Thursday signed a deal with Poland to build a missile-interceptor base there, despite bitter opposition from Moscow, which sees the plan as aimed at blunting its own nuclear deterrent - a charge the Pentagon dismisses. But in light of Russia's heavy-handed action in Georgia and the missed signals and conflicting reports surrounding it, this may not be the most auspicious moment to further enrage the neighborhood bully by deploying a dubious...
...developing a system of mobile missiles that would be less vulnerable to attack. If protecting silos is the real aim of SDI, asked Stanford Physicist Sidney Drell, why has the Administration dropped all funding for the one defensive system now known to be an effective terminal defense: nuclear-tipped interceptor missiles? Though he personally does not favor an active missile defense, Drell questioned the logic of diverting money from available off-the-shelf technology and using it to chase Reagan's dream of a multilayered shield against all Soviet missiles. Protecting specific targets, be they cities or silos...
...Kwajalein Atoll in the South Pacific. "We will be forced to react not with diplomatic, but with military-technical methods" if the shield is ever deployed, the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement. Russia has threatened to re-aim its missiles at those sites if the system is built...

...Agency, working out of Cheyenne Mountain in Colorado, has military officers peering at computer screens 24/7, looking for telltale signs of missile launches. An array of satellites and a huge floating radar in the Pacific are linked through those officers to ground-based missiles in Alaska and California and interceptor missiles aboard Navy warships. Since 2001, the Pentagon has shot down 34 out of 42 test missiles it has targeted. Critics contend the tests don't replicate real-world conditions, because the timing and trajectory of the target "incoming" missiles are known beforehand to those trying to shoot them down...
