...with student concerns, it is always the students who lose out. The prime example sits at 90 Mt. Auburn Street: a lot at the hub of student life that was given to the library to build a library administration building, thanks in large part to then-Dean and currently interim-Dean Jeremy R. Knowles. And given that FAS owns all of the College’s real estate and can allocate it as it sees fit, the new dean will have many more opportunities to give space to—or take space from—the College for everything...

Twenty years after Interim President Derek C. Bok named the first director of the Safra Foundation Center for Ethics at Harvard, he had that choice to make again. Bok tapped Frederick Schauer, the Stanton professor of the First Amendment at the Kennedy School, to be the new leader of the center yesterday. Schauer will replace the center’s current director and founder, Dennis F. Thompson, who is stepping down after 20 years at the helm. “Twenty years seems like a natural time to leave. Skocpol’s penchant for controversy, however, has not been without its costs. Most notably, it recently backfired in her widely rumored campaign to become the next dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS). Her leadership style, which interim Dean of the Faculty Jeremy R. Knowles tactfully termed “gently unambiguous,” proved to be the sticking point with many senior faculty members, recalling the strong-willed tendencies of Summers’ tenure. This ultimately led to University President Drew G. Faust voicing doubt about Skocpol?...

Knowles, a chemist and an interim dean three months away from stepping down from the post, identified a dearth of scientists and poor student-faculty ratios as problems that should inform the future expansion of FAS. As new, high-cost science buildings go up in the North Yard, the stage seems to be set for an influx of scientists and engineers into the Faculty—nearly two years after former FAS dean William C. Kirby unexpectedly slowed Faculty growth...
