...understand that at last I had removed a big tombstone off myself. It wasn't one of those from my interior graveyard, but the huge tombstone which covers the Jews. I could do it because it wasn't betrayal, or a subterfuge. I had discovered where to place it and how not to forget it. The country could accept the Holocaust as a measure of its destiny, not simply within the framework of remembrance and lament...
Despite the interior excitement and free-spending atmosphere, much of Atlantic City remains pocked with urban blight and decay. Worse, state officials are concerned about the infiltration of organized crime into the business and last week unsealed an indictment against several people, some of whom are thought to have Mafia ties, for tampering with slot machines at Caesars. Even so, investors who shunned Atlantic City when gambling was first made legal five years ago are now having hasty second thoughts. Unless one has an unusually precise idea of the modern Hungarian style, one strains to characterize Mr. Andropov by his possessions...
...CHARACTER OF NOWAK is the center of Moonlighting, with the others merely secondary. Wish only the little dialogue and only spare interior monologue Jeremy Irons managed to capture and delineate every nuance of his character's brooding intensity. An equally superb performance is that of writer-director Skolimkowski. Conceived and completed in one month. Moonlighting shows a rare combination of white hot inspiration and totally lucid artistic control. Every scene, from the opening to the remarkable closing image is effective and forms a part of considered whole. The almost documentary like cinematography captures the dark visual textures and somber Irony...
