...that the real thing feels out of place. The city is built on simulation, quotation, weird unconvincing displacements, in which cultural icons are endlessly but never convincingly quoted. Here is the Luxor Hotel, that huge silly pyramid with its plaster Anubises and fiber-glass Amon-Ras, its cavernous interior housing a facsimile of the Manhattan skyline. Here, under construction, is a casino in the form of the Doges Palace in Venice, complete with a small-scale version of the Campanile bearing a replica of the original's gilded angel on its vertex. Here too is Caesars Palace, looking like...

Caroline Hall and Randall Jaynes, playing the title characters Bette and Boo, make a convincingly disfunctional couple. Hall in particular shines as the wistful Bette, a woman whose surface seems trite but who claims a deeply troubled and romantic interior. Perhaps the most touching scene in the play is a monologue Bette delivers on the phone to an old girlfriend she has lost touch with. For the first time in the production, Bette sheds her exterior flakiness and openly reveals the profoundly disappointed young woman she has become. "If we find out four and a half billion years after the formation of the solar system that there's still enough heat that ice will melt on the interior of these bodies," said Margaret Kivelson, one of the researchers behind the study, "we have to do a little bit of rethinking...

...nearest relation, though, is architecture. Through a gap in the wall, you can walk into each of Serra's Torqued Ellipses and contemplate its interior space. Serra got the idea from a Baroque church in Rome: Francesco Borromini's San Carlo alle Quattro Fontane, whose plan is a quatrefoil stretched to a near ellipse. Standing in it, Serra wondered, "What if I turn this form on itself?" But the closest architectural sibling of these new sculptures is the work of Serra's friend Frank Gehry, the designer of the spectacular Guggenheim museum in Bilbao, Spain, with its freely twisted...

...Democratic Party's thorough nationalism. This continent's mountain region has always felt itself colonized by the national government. That it still feels that alienation is reflected in the fact that the Republican Party, always willing to trash Big Government, now dominates every level of government in the interior West. As a Democrat, I think the time has come for my party to begin trusting westerners with far more control over their own landscape. But the real issue is not about the Democratic Party, but about the democratic spirit...
