Nevertheless, the look of Islamic art is overwhelmingly abstract and, to a Western eye, puzzlingly so. This is partly due to the circumstance that, illiterate in Arabic, a Westerner cannot decipher the inscriptions or savor the interplay between conceptual and visual meaning in Islamic calligraphy. One can visually enjoy the writing on an 8th century Koran page: the angular Kufic script done in a swordsman's strokes, decisive and muscular; the rich gold foliations round the white chapter heading; the placement of red dots, fit to make Mondriaan despair. Nevertheless, it is frustrating not to be able to read...

...post-Stalinist state, affected by the "disintegration" of the official ideology (including the dogmas of "socialist realism") ended up preferring strictly non-political art, while art in general and film in particular were playing an eminently political role as demystifiers of ideologies. In this global perspective of subtle interplay of politics and culture, Liehm sees the history of post war Czech film from the point of view of generations...

JACKSON'S anguish is revealed, in an hour long conversation with a psychiatric specialist, in a way that makes Rag more of a documentary than a structured dramatic work. There is no real interplay between the patient and doctor--who seems to be no more than a vehicle for exposing Jackson's story to the audience. From such an intense, personal conversation we would expect some rapport to develop between the men, but the only development in the play is that the story becomes...

Kissinger, moreover, has too often failed to cultivate his relations with Congress. Oddly, although he is a skillful compromiser and has a remarkable feeling for the interplay of power overseas, he has been unable to deal with Senators and Representatives at home. A case in point was his emotional argument last week that Congress, by holding back on Administration requests for additional and relatively small amounts of military aid, was largely responsible for the worsening situ ation in Indochina. That line only exacerbated the debate and reopened old wounds...

...Melvoin's superb fall production of Philadelphia Here I Come, the overlapping ambiguity between the two characters who play the schizophrenic selves of one person made for a rich interplay. Melvoin has consciously chosen to differentiate very clearly the two main characters in Rosencrantz. Jeff Rubin as Rosencrantz plays a good Yiddish Sancho Panza character who alternates between dawdling silliness and self-indignant outrages over nothing. But our comic response is much more problematic towards Guildenstern (Steve O'Donnell), played as a brooding almost Hamlet-like character who utters Stoppard's lines dripping with metaphysical existentialisms as if they were...
