...most important of British royal functions. It comes with the crown; it comes with the territory. Queen Elizabeth seems well aware of her symbolic roles, but she has also demonstrated a keen awareness of the force of her favor, a good working understanding of the subtle political interplay that keeps the British monarchy bobbing just above the breaking edge of parliamentary politics. "It is its capacity as a political deterrent, which is not less effective for being unused, that gives the crown, and the nation's confidence in the person who wears it, their real importance," notes British Constitutional...

...year-old Zhao, academic discussions about the interplay of politics and economics are a great leap from writing articles such as "China's Third Steel Base Starts Producing." Since his first visit to the United States--he arrived on a slow boat from China with $25 in his pocket--Zhao has written about everything from the "Three Anti's" Campaign to the Boston Symphony Orchestra's recent tour--in short, almost anything a Chinese journalist of the past 20 years could observe...

Carter knew that. Reagan knew it too. So did the powers that be in Iran. Last week, largely because the American election was at hand, the bizarre interplay between U.S. domestic politics and the pandemonium that passes for government in Iran became more feverish, preoccupying and unpredictable than ever. Shakespeare's design for As You Like It is one of his most transparent: a sketchy framework of undeveloped plot hangs at both ends of the play as an excuse to get the characters into the forest of Arden, where the complex interplay of nearallegorical characters assumes the aspect, at times, of a philosophical inquiry. A banished duke holds court over a pastoral golden age in the forest; his men pluck the lute, sing, and sleep while Jaques the melancholiac provides counterpoint to their contentment. Into their hermetically enchanted realm bound a pair of lovers, whose parabolic approaches give Shakespeare...
