...music on this disc, like ancient Gaul, is easily divided into three separate parts, although they have been craftily interwoven by those folks at Island Records. First, and beyond criticism, are four great songs roughly from the period when the movie is set: "Voodoo Child" by Jimi Hendrix, "A Dedicated Follower of Fashion" by the Kinks, "Is This Love" by Bob Marley, and "Whiskey In A Jar" by Thin Lizzy. These songs are just fantastic, though you probably don't need this disc to listen to them, and it doesn't particularly add to their brilliance to hear them together...

Though her work is sometimes overpraised for feminist reasons, it carries a deep strand of % recollection interwoven with sexual fantasy and dreams of vengeance, refracted through strange uses of material. Included in the Venice show are some of her recent cage sculptures, including Cell (Choisy), a harsh essay on memory: inside an iron-mesh enclosure is a pink marble effigy of her childhood home in France, where...

...nothing makes it more modern than psychology. Playwright Craig Lucas (Prelude to a Kiss) and composer Gerald Busby fuse the two in ORPHEUS IN LOVE, an off- Broadway retelling of the Orpheus legend -- mingling hints of Oedipus -- in which the characters are music teachers or pupils and hell is interwoven with high school. The sound, too, (by a string quartet, piano and two bassoons) - hovers between melodic-traditional and staccato-modern. Kirsten Sanderson's witty staging deftly evokes dreams -- their fleeting lyricism, transposed logic, sexual ambiguity and poignant blend of chagrin and nostalgia...
