...Just being young and fashion-savvy has given Takai and the other designers an edge over the competition?they can intuit, to some extent, what will be popular next. It's far more an art than a science. "When I'm in Los Angeles I buy things I think are cute in used-clothing stores and change the color, size, emblem, whatever, to fit Japanese teens. I just decide what to do case by case with whatever pops into my head," Takai explains. Even firms without young designers find the traditional drawing-board-to-mock-up-to-sample-to-store...

...were to ask, in the usual sociological way, what relic an alien culture might use to intuit our pedagogy, my vote for the blackboard would be immediate. Here is an artifact whose interdisciplinary presence is rivaled only by the desk and the pencil. Greek classes, French classes, math classes and Core classes all revolve around its inimitable black surface. Professors and TFs--who do not speak the same language--will, in their turn, pick up a piece of chalk and begin to write...

Shore expects that, before long, a few megasites will probably emerge, each offering a soup-to-nuts array of services and products, including office pens and paper and 401(k) planning. Traditional financial players that work with small businesses, like Intuit or Merrill Lynch, are likely to swoop in and buy or partner with these megasites, adding their expertise and long-established relationships to the equation. "You want to be the one place small-business owners go, because once you have them you want to suck them dry," says Shore. BizBuyer...

Access to the Windows desktop was another weapon in Microsoft's war with Netscape. Microsoft wanted to persuade leading Internet content providers--including the Disney, Intuit and National Geographic websites--to side with Explorer. Microsoft offered them a deal. If they promoted and distributed Explorer--and not Netscape's Navigator--their sites would be listed on the Windows desktop. That would give them free access to millions of Windows users, an invaluable source of traffic for a fledgling site. All this leveraging proved highly effective: Netscape's share of the browser market plunged from 80% in 1996 to 30% today...
