...those of Senator Joseph R. McCarthy in the early 1950's. Cole's comparison is extremely unsound. Lindbergh was not simply an objective surveyor of the international scene, and Cole's portrayal of him as a Lone Eagle victimized by a powerful administration intolerant of dissent, is patently invalid. Lindbergh was a Germanophile, extremely sympathetic to Nazi policies in Germany, and obviously a racist. He saw the Soviet Union as the paramount world danger and said frequently that he would rather ally himself with the Nazis than with the U.S.S.R., a nation of "godlessness, cruelty, and barbarism." It would...

...that as the Academy member "sponsor" he only initiated the scientific-refereeing system and was figuratively, as well as literally, 300 miles away from the experiments and responsibility for their accuracy. But, curiously, Watson also seemed to know enough about the findings to be the first to declare them invalid and untrue, contradicting the testimony of an admittedly disgraced Rosenfeld that they were legitimate, and ignoring conventional scientific folk wisdom that failure to replicate results can as easily result from unknown changes in conditions, materials and preparations as they can from mysterious tamperings...

...Kremlin action came in angry response to conditions imposed by Congress, such as the so-called Jackson Amendment (see box). In declaring their 1972 trade accord with the U.S. invalid, the Soviets rejected by extension the Trade Reform Act signed by President Ford early this year. Thus the U.S.S.R. spurned lower U.S. tariff rates and $300 million in Export-Import Bank credits, while reneging on their agreement to repay $722 million in wartime Lend-Lease debts...

...Buckley argues that narcotics addiction is a contagious disease because most addicts acquire the habit by associating with other addicts. It is the government's responsibility, therefore, to incarcerate these addicts just as it would quarantine small pox carriers during a plague. But Friedman argues that this is an invalid parallel. Someone who catches a contagious disease is an unwilling victim. Someone who takes up dope after associating with users has done so because has has seen their lifestyle and chosen to accept it. He may have done so because he is psychologically weak or misinformed, but that same possibility...
