He's the injured shot putter who's much better known as Marion's husband. Well, according to the IOC, he had tested positive for steroids five times recently, once in a meet and four times out of competition. Any other week, any other wife, this is just the latest pathetic drug case. But C. J. being who he is and this happening when it did, right away...
...wasn't the only case that brought tears, either. Did you hear about the 16-year-old Romanian gymnast Andrea Raducan? She had to give back a gold medal because she took cold medicine for the sniffles - medicine a coach had given her. "We have applied the law," said IOC director general Fran?ois Carrard. "In the fight against doping we have to be tough and refrain from emotions and feelings." Sometimes that's hard...
...whole way through! When's the last time you saw a gymnast smile? (And not that fake, toothy thing they do for the judges after they finish a routine-you know the smile that accompanies the pose that looks vaguely like the pee-pee dance?) Of course, the IOC being the vigilant, honest folk that they are, immediately drug test little Andreea after she wins. And it's discovered with much fanfare that she took-gasp!-cold pills. Gone is her medal, her pride and most certainly her smile. Couldn't the IOC focus their attention somewhere else? Leave...
...Merode isn't helping things, either. While rightfully punishing Hunter, he also made remarks that the U.S. track and field association has habitually hid positive drug results from the IOC. De Merode's claims are something to look into, but his lack of evidence doesn't engender any trustworthy feelings...
Second, there has to be more communication among the various national associations, sports federations and the IOC. It is absolutely preposterous that the IOC isn't required to be informed of every drug infraction. Drug testing may be a joke in smaller events, but at the Olympics it should be of paramount importance...
