...case [Nov. 18] when it states that Nancy Nahon cannot remarry "until the Supreme Court acts on Fein's appeal and his conviction becomes final." Indeed, Nancy Nahon was free to remarry from the moment Fein was sentenced to life imprisonment and thus became "civilly dead," his marriage ipso facto terminated. In a civil proceeding brought by the family of the alleged victim of the murder for which Fein was convicted, Supreme Court Justice Charles Marks stated: "The declaration of civil decease and disability is clearly effective as of the time of the imposition of sentence...
Director Brook explains that he is not taking sides on the morality of the war. His concern, he says, is for the Englishmen whose life is ipso facto affected by U.S. foreign policy. "Here you have the basic conflict that is at the root of all drama. The Englishman is concerned about Viet Nam - and that is a lie, because he isn't. And he's not concerned about Viet Nam - and that is a lie, because he is." How the Englishmen felt about US, however, was not quite so ambiguous. The first-night audience responded with...
...rehearing, though, the state pointed out that the detective had denied the promises, and the court reversed itself. Kroll vainly argued a new theory: that Danny's statement became ipso facto involuntary, and therefore inadmissible, as soon as the police turned away his lawyer. Kroll hoped to end "swearing contests" on the voluntariness of confessions by establishing an objective test: if police violate a specific rule, any confession they elicit is automatically excluded. Kroll's proposed rule was the Illinois statute guaranteeing access to a lawyer. But the court recoiled from enforcing it: such...
Prostitution will continue to exist as long as there is a demand. Few sociologists would support the statement that the abolition of unemployment would, ipso facto, eliminate prostitution [April 12]. Only with the elimination of demand, through a changed social climate, will prostitution be fully abolished. Eradication of unemployment and the occasional big-city "cleanups" have proved, and will continue to prove, of little value in combating the continuance of this "industry." When, then, will prostitution cease to exist? The answer will probably be forthcoming from radiation physicists rather than sociologists...
Formerly, HUT attempted to screen volunteers on the dubious assumption that Group I and II students were ipso facto poor risks. One of the first accomplishments of last year's chairman, Charles Hanson '63-3, was to eliminate this wishful fallacy of academic snobbishness. With the end of academic exclusiveness, HUT has gained many "magnificent teachers," according to one school superintendent. John Limbert '64, last year's HUT vice-chairman, described the interviewing of prospective volunteers: "If a volunteer is articulate, we see if there is a place for his skill. If he has some good ideas as to what...
