...surrender. Tell your friends: the grumpy old man finally gets it. After years of arguing and analyzing, I now officially concede that movie comedy is meant to be always and only about men behaving at an IQ and/or age level far below expectations; that movie courtship is a process of stumbling into sex, not the suave negotiation of seduction; and that, after decades when Hollywood offered the likes of Clark Gable, Cary Grant and Steve McQueen were the emblems of masculinity, it now proposes the mentally and emotionally challenged oaf as dreamboat. What woman could look at Ferrell in this...

...would mean than with what he would or could accomplish as President. Rather than finding this inspiring, I feel it smacks of American narcissism and naiveté. For the country's sake, I hope people - and the press - will evaluate the candidates on their qualifications, not their pop-culture IQ. Carrie Wolfe, Sterling...

...minutes. So argues a team of psychologists from the University of California at Irvine that published its preliminary findings in the British scientific journal Nature. Listening to relaxation tapes or sitting in silence had no effect, but the college students scored between eight and nine points higher on an IQ test after hearing a Mozart sonata. David Mirich, a psychologist in Colorado, measured the intelligence of 220 BDSMers and found that they posted above-average IQ scores, "which is very unlike the criminal population of sex offenders and criminals," he says. Furthermore, their behavior doesn't appear to be a response to an unhealthy upbringing, nor correlate to psychopathology. Researchers have a long way to go to understand the phenomenon, but it seems clear that the desire manifests early in life. "When they were playing cowboys and Indians as children," Mirich says of the BDSMers...

...part this is because, over the past couple of decades, Americans have turned inward as film-culture consumers. For fun they watch the big Hollywood movies; for edification they go, in much smaller numbers, to the American indies, which have replaced foreign films as the higher-IQ supplement. Another reason is, frankly, that the foreign stuff isn't as exciting as it once was. The preferred art-film mode is dour minimalism, in which glum folks surrender to cosmic torpor in front of a static camera. Even as the pulse of world entertainment, from pop movies to video games...
