Ahmad is more liberal than most in the fundamentalist group. Female employees at the station wear Islamic head scarves-but not severe black Iranian chadors. Ahmad has also phased out dour Iranian movies in favor of more popular Egyptian and Western fare: last week's schedule featured Under California Stars, a 1948 Roy Rogers western (Trigger is captured by horse thieves) and The Day of the Triffids, a 1963 British sci-fi film about man-eating plants. Not that Lighthouse TV will ever be confused with hbo; scenes enlivened by Hollywood staples like sex and alcohol are deleted, and voice...
DIED. MEHDI BAZARGAN, 87, Iranian academic whose lifelong campaign for democracy culminated in his brief premiership after the Islamic revolution; in Zurich. An engineering professor, Bazargan led the National Resistance Movement, which accused the Shah of human-rights violations. Imprisoned several times for his activism, Bazargan allied himself with Ayatullah Ruhollah Khomeini, who made him Prime Minister of the provisional government after the Shah was ousted, in 1979. "In the four years I have been at Harvard, I would say a half dozen of my colleagues know I'm gay and have no problem with it," Skjaervo said. "They might not think it is such a big deal being gay. But gay people do have problems...
...government reports say Hamas may be getting financial aid from Iran through Iran's embassy in Jordan, a U.S. ally. A Congressional Research Service report says "there is some circumstantial evidence to suggest that Jordan unwittingly or reluctantly is hosting a potential Iranian conduit to Hamas." Meanwhile, the State Department -- which doubts the report -- acknowledged that Hamas is receiving some money from private contributors in Saudi Arabia and other moderate Arab statesPost your opinion on theInternationalbulletin board...
