...truth of what is happening in Afghanistan was laid out during recent gatherings held by the advocacy group Iraq Veterans Against the War, during which vets testified to the brutality of the occupation. Hamid Karzai's government is just like the puppet regimes the U.S. set up in South Vietnam. And as in Vietnam, civilians are being massacred by U.S. troops. The media will deny it until, like My Lai, it becomes too big to be denied. While I heartily disagree with its policies, even the Taliban would be better for Afghanistan than the U.S.'s self-serving occupation. Hannah...
...senior Senators on the Armed Services Committee beg to differ. Democrat Joe Lieberman of Connecticut and Republican Lindsey Graham of South Carolina have written to President Obama, urging him to fight the release. "We know that many terrorists captured in Iraq have told American interrogators that one of the reasons they decided to join the violent jihadist war against America was what they saw on al-Qaeda videos of abuse of detainees at Abu Ghraib," the pair wrote Obama May 6. "The release of these old photographs of past behavior that has now been clearly prohibited can serve no public...
Ironically, some of the best friends to Christians in the Middle East have been at odds with America and the West. The secular societies that formed in the 1950s and '60s in opposition to Israel - especially the Baathist regimes in Iraq and Syria, and Egypt under Nasser - were pretty good protectors of religious pluralism. About 5% or 6% of Iraq's population in the 1970s were Christian, and some of Saddam Hussein's most prominent officials, including Deputy Prime Minister Tariq Aziz, were Christians. But since the American invasion of Iraq, Christians have fled in droves, and constitute less than...
...Pentagon and Camp Liberty as more details are revealed. But sadly this latest tragedy is unlikely to shock anyone familiar with recent years of statistics showing a steady rise in violent crimes within the U.S. military. Soldiers and Marines who frequently venture onto the streets of Iraq have a derisive term for fellow service members and military contractors who never leave the confines of military installations - known as Forward Operating Bases, or FOBs. Those who stay "in the wire" are often referred to with snickers as Fobbits, a play on Hobbits from Lord of the Rings. Still, anyone living...
Sexual assault cases in the military have risen significantly in recent years as well. A Pentagon report released earlier this year said 165 cases of sexual assault were reported among troops serving in Afghanistan and Iraq in 2008, up 26% from the year before. The overall incident rate was up 8% among U.S. service members serving worldwide, with 2,923 cases of sexual assault reported. U.S. military officials have stressed that some of the rise in the figures may be attributable to an increase in the reporting of incidents but acknowledged that the trend was troubling in any case...
