...right Daisy in David Merrick's yet-to-be-made film version of The Great Gatsby, Mia Farrow does not intend to rest on her laurels-or her pretty face. Be fore she starts filming, Mia, who is getting $200,000 for Gatsby, is spending the time as Irina in Chekhov's The Three Sisters, with London's Company Theater. Her take: $60 a week...
...sort, and the comic moments are not lost in the film. Vanya's senile mother reads her pamphlets on the emancipation of women and smokes cigarettes (which seems to encompass her idea of emancipation). Astrov gives a stirring rendition of the weather report when Vanya interrupts his seduction of Irina--an example of the Chekhovian principle that the words we exchange in conversation don't mean a damn thing. And Vanya, the prototype useless intellectual, constantly brings a smile of recognition with his temper tantrums...
...highest praise goes to Irina Kupchenko's Sonya. I remember at my first viewing of the film feeling that this Sonya was too young and pretty to be Chekhov's Sonya: I envisioned a cowish sort of girl--hardworking, trusting, basically provincial and unstimulating. Oleg and Irina had been seen together in London restaurants and nightclubs for months, and though she is not believed to be with the KGB, she defected with him. Oleg was supposed to be a trade official who bought such British...
...almost all cinematic robberies, things work marvelously well on the mechanical level and fail dismally on the human. Among the cast, Delon is effective as a cold-blooded killer whose attention is invariably diverted whenever one of Papa's daughters-in-law (Irina Demick) slinks across his pearl-handled pistol sights. Immobile and imperturbable of feature, Gabin looks more and more as if his stolid face belonged on a French equivalent of Mount Rushmore. The final and inevitable disintegration of his family may lack the tragic intensity of King Lear, but it will please devotees of The Godfather well...
