...Olympics--from the demonstrators gunned down in Mexico's Tlatelolco Square in 1968 to the boycotts of the 1980s and '90s--that would seem a pretty forlorn hope. Chinese activists, like others before them, have wanted to use the world's attention on their nation to reduce the iron grip that politics and ideology have held over their lives for so long. "The Olympics are about human nature," says Bao Tong, a former adviser to Zhao Ziyang, the reformist Communist Party General Secretary at the time of the Tiananmen massacre in 1989. "You cannot separate the Olympics from human rights...

...police actions, however, some are trying. The Daily Mail's David Jones wrote that while he hopes the police are wrong, "a terrible nagging doubt has refused to leave me." It may be "unpalatable," he adds, but "we can no longer take their innocence as an absolute, cast-iron certainty." Olga Craig in the Sunday Telegraph recently described Kate McCann, pointedly, as cold and distant. Some publications are hedging their bets with a two-track approach: supporting the McCanns, but also printing stories that tend to bolster the police line of inquiry. London's Evening Standard recently quoted sources...

Wednesday's demonstrations cap what has turned into the longest sustained display of dissent in Burma in nearly two decades. At first, the ruling junta, which has maintained an iron grip for 45 years, tried to extinguish the protest movement by arresting dozens of pro-democracy activists. But clapping handcuffs on Buddhist monks is a far more difficult proposition in this deeply devout nation. "The monks are the only ones who really have the trust of the people," says Khin Omar, an exiled dissident now living in Thailand. "When they speak up, people listen...

...there with the team again,” Bode said. “We were hitting the ball very straight, which was important for this course.” According to Bode, the course’s firm greens and high winds put a premium on accurate driving and iron play. Sophomore Claire Sheldon and junior Emily Balmert tied for fourth, each shooting eight over par for the tournament. Sheldon shot successive rounds of 76, while Balmert improved on her first round score of 78 with a 74 yesterday. They were followed by sophomore Sarah Harvey, whose 10 over...

...film put me in mind of another incident from the '70s. I worked for a woman whose 18-year-old daughter was bicycling through Central Park when a 15-year-old boy stopped her, stole her bike and killed her with a tire iron. The grieving mother's response to this atrocity was to write a letter to the Times asking for the murderer not to be taken down by vigilantes or executed by the state, but treated with justice and mercy. It probably wouldn't make a very good movie, but that woman was heroic. She knew that...
