...second tier of summer's heroes included some surprises, too. Iron Man, a new franchise built around a lesser-known Marvel Comics character and a lead actor, Robert Downey Jr., whose indie-heavy resume didn't suggest he'd lure the masses, managed to take in $317.5 million. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, the film most prognosticators expected to whip into first place, came in third with a respectable though not earth-shattering $315 million. Another summer sure thing - Will Smith in the superhero movie Hancock - made $226 million, a hit by most actors' standards...

...that's brought with it kind of a whole new chapter in Alaska's life. Like my husband - up here they refer to him as the "first dude," not the first gentleman. And Todd... And he is such a dude. He's a four-time winner of the Iron Dog snow machine race, which is the the world's longest and they say toughest snow machine race, 2,000 miles across Alaska. A whole new chapter here when Todd is asked to do things like - and he graciously complies and he has a good time doing it - hosting...

...killing dissenters to Robert Mugabe's regime on a daily basis, Zimbabwe's opposition could be forgiven for having a few things to get off their chests. On Tuesday, they did. For the first time in living memory, 84-year-old Mugabe, who has ruled Zimbabwe with an iron fist for 28 years, was heckled and drowned out in parliament. As Mugabe tried to deliver a keynote speech opening a new session of parliament, opposition members - who now form a majority in the assembly and reject Mugabe's authority to call them together - broke out in whistles, shouts and even...

...just me - I mean, me and my infallible film sense - or are action movies getting better while nearly every other genre has gone fallow and flaccid? I'm no special fan of cine-mayhem, but I'm buoyed by the craft and verve of recent entertainments like Iron Man, Speed Racer, Wanted, Hellboy and The Dark Knight. Even so-so entries like The Incredible Hulk and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Billionaire Sexagenarians Trying to Recapture the Glories of Their Middle Years interrupt their meandering with set pieces that are figuratively or literally dynamite - like an old Astaire...

Motorpsycho Nightmare It's 2012, we're told at the start. The U.S. economy has collapsed. Prisons have been privatized. The government rules with an iron fist, and the populace is sedated with violent entertainment. (Wait, this isn't futurism; it's a Daily Kos blog.) On a nouveau Alcatraz called Terminal Island, Warden Hennessey (Joan Allen, merging her purse-lipped Pat Nixon impersonation with the imperious tenseness of Dick Nixon in late-Watergate mode) is in charge of an annual televised car-nage held on a giant track within the prison. In this Death Race, lifers drive the souped...
