...Submarines. The House debates of the proposed S-4 Investigating Commission scarcely transcended a private wrangel among four New York members, the Messrs. La Guardia, Griffin, O'Connor and Black. Bulky, blue jowled Major La Guardia, irregular Republican, had stolen a march on his Democratic col leagues by riding from New London, Conn., to Boston in the Submarine S-8. He had returned full of submarine lore, a loud champion of the Navy. "Was it because they treated him so nicely?" sneered Mr. Griffin, who rather fancies his own knowledge of submarines. "Are not the members of this caste...

...inaudible and exciting music, the bright statues began a fantastically deliberate ballet through the squares of the chessboard. The pawns stepped forward with a delicate terror; the rooks swept furiously, in straight lines, across the spaces, and the bishops slanted with slow dexterity between the stiff irregular maneuvers of the knights. Soon there were fewer dancers in the ballet; two sinister queens pranced among them with precise cruelty. The music to which they moved grew faint and there were long periods in which the figurines stood still and the two men stared at the board with a contemplative fury. Finally...

...wife and their hired man stretched out their hands palm upwards, like suppliants, to Dr. H. P. Senftner, associate director of the state department of health. Their palms were covered with great ulcers, about one-half inch in diameter, one-sixteenth to one-eighth inch deep; the margins were irregular in outline and thickened. Dr. Senftner told the three to flip their hands over. The backs were covered with similar sores. One of the patients had the same sort of lesion on his face. All three had rather high fever, pain in their hands and in one case a swollen...

...Norman Crowne as they animate his son and daughter. As these two are more tragic, they are more spectacular. Their bright uneven beauty sometimes begins to be a little unreal. But the construction of her theme, the way in which their mercurial doings are played against the less irregular pattern of the Frobishers outweighs and hides their unreality. The glow of "red sky at morning, shepherds' warning," pervades the pages of the book, rising to a sultry heat at noon, and sinking to the destined thunderstorm at the end of the short astonishing day. Never attaining the complete objectivity...

...baseball stands containing 6,000 covered seats and 6,000 bleacher seats will be ready for the first baseball game next spring.
