...DIED. ISAAC STERN, 81, classical violinist who played everything from Bartok to Bach in his own impassioned style; of heart failure; in New York City. He practiced obsessively. "I have begged him not to play so much," manager Sol Hurok told the New York Times in 1959. "I tell him, 'The less you play, the longer you will play.' It does no good." Stern was a generous teacher who mentored and encouraged cellist Yo-Yo Ma, violinist Itzhak Perlman and pianist Emanuel Ax (see Eulogy, below...

...first met ISAAC STERN when I was a young pianist, just beginning to perform. I was so bowled over by the force of his personality and reputation that it was many years before I realized he was not 7 ft. tall. One of the thrills of being onstage with him was the feeling of belonging he exuded. It was that quality...

Donna Schaper, a Congregationalist minister, were children of the '60s and social activists. That didn't mean they got good vibes last year when it became clear that their oldest son Isaac, now 18, was having sex with his girlfriend. Goldstein and Schaper each phoned the young woman's parents to discuss the couple. Says Donna: "Her mother said, 'I know they're doing this, and my daughter's protected.' She had really done well by taking care of things. It helped...

...Frontman Isaac Brock’s endearingly whiny voice and distinct guitar sound remain, but something seems amiss in Everywhere—as if the energy has been sucked completely dry from Modest Mouse. Brian Deck’s production removes the edge and luster from the Modest Mouse sound, leaving the band sounding too dull and warm. The first track, “Willful Suspension of Disbelief,” starts ethereally with a falsetto “everywhere” layered over and over in the background, but this soon proves mind-numbing rather than inspiring. The next...
