SOUTHERN CHARM-Isa Glenn -Knopf ($2.50). There are few more ludicrous members of the U. S. population than the garrulous women who stray from rustic homes below the Mason & Dixon Line into the complicated excitements of Northern metropolitanism, there to stand, like cats in the rain, meowing about their cousins, Southern courtesy, and Robert E. Lee. These women are a small class; but they are a class which may be stamped upon vigorously, with the hobnailed heel of satire...
...HEAT-Isa Glenn-Knopf ($2.50). This hot jungle of a book contains an innocent West Pointer, a brainy girl from the States and a Dolores whose scented mantilla appears at first to be the real Castilian thing. The scene is perfumed Manila, "charged with alien, bewildering passions" (cf. jacket). The West Pointer is not inflamed by the virtue of his countrywoman's doctrine of drainage and spelling for the natives, but Dolores, an honest-to-goodness Spanish senorita, and in trouble-well, that is different. ...most interesting song recitals of the season was given here by Isa Kremer, Russian soprano. Her program was made up of songs of different nations, including an American Negro lullaby. It is amazing how Miss Kremer contrives to catch the characteristic spirit of the peoples whose songs she sings. In the United States for less than a year, she nevertheless achieves quite a plantation flavor in the " coon songs" that she sings. Her versatile talent is especially to be noticed in her interpretation of Neapolitan songs. These are peculiarly characteristic of Naples, which has a mood unlike that...
