October 16, 1995 will be a tragic day in our history, and yet America slumbers. On that regrettable morning, it is expected that one million black men will march on the Capitol under the auspices of the Nation of Islam, and we are told from all sides not to be alarmed. With all due respect, I would disagree with the proponents of this demonstration and all those who indulge them: I would say that every freedom-loving American should be very alarmed indeed...

Louis Farrakhan, Minister of the Nation of Islam and a prolific peddler of anti-semitic, chauvinistic and black supremacist doctrine, is the driving force behind this demonstration. The ostensible purpose of his "Million Man March" is to reaffirm the spirit of black manhood. Conrad Muhammed, a representative of Farrakhan, amplified this idea in a recent speech at the ARCO Forum. According to Muhammed, "If the black man continues to be the Achilles heal of America, then the future of America does not hold well." Which is not to say Simpson's lawyers have not crossed the line into cynical exploitation of blacks' sense of racial aggrievement. Case in point: Cochran's acceptance of security guards from the Nation of Islam, which strikes many as being like a white lawyer's taking on bodyguards from the Ku Klux Klan. That was in part because I think the evidence points to Simpson's guilt, as well as to police corruption...

...will be joining the Million Man March on Washington being organized by Nation of Islam Leader Louis Farrakhan for Oct. 16? Count out two of the nation's largest black religious denominations, the National Baptist Convention, U.S.A., and the Progressive National Baptist Convention. Not ecumenical enough, they said, assailing Jesse Jackson's assertion--which Jackson later retracted--that the two denominations had endorsed the march...

Colin Powell says a scheduling conflict will prevent him from participating in next Monday's Million Man March in Washington, D.C., led by Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan. "Nobody really expected Powell to join the march," says TIME's Sylvestor Monroe. "It is a no-win situation for him. If he goes, he starts a firestorm with white people who think he's supporting Farrakhan. If he doesn't, he looks like he does not support what the march is supposed to be about, which is black self-sufficiency and family strength...
