Taxila should be a showcase of that civilization. Today a town about 20 miles northwest of Islamabad, it was a center of Buddhist learning, a must-visit for travelers like Xuanzang seeking Buddhist scripture and wisdom. Formerly part of the Persian Empire, Taxila was one of Alexander's conquests and is today a World Heritage Site. The museum there, started in 1918, is one of Pakistan's finest, with more than 4,000 artifacts from the Gandhara civilization. But no one comes to visit much anymore. There was more bad news for Washington out of Islamabad late Wednesday, Dec. 16, this time from Pakistan's Supreme Court. The court overruled an amnesty on corruption charges that had been granted to President Asif Ali Zardari and other senior figures, spurring efforts by political opponents to force America's top ally in Pakistan to step down. ...Pakistani officials say that following a tip-off by the FBI, they began tracking the five men as soon as they landed in Karachi in late November. They then allegedly traveled to the city of Hyderabad and finally to Sargodha, 120 miles south of Islamabad. "We wanted to see who they were meeting, whether it was Taliban or Lashkar or Jaish," says an official who asked not to be named.
