...definition of rock 'n' roll is very broad," says Jim Henke, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's vice president of exhibitions. "It's not just skinny white guys who play guitar." Henke argues that in the context of the museum, rock 'n' roll isn't just a sound; it's a culture. That culture extends from doo-wop harmonies and dance routines to people who bite the heads off bats. And somewhere within that culture is a Swedish pop group that has sold nearly 400 million albums...

...shooting off one way into hip-hop, another way into alternative, still another into emo. With such a broad definition of rock 'n' roll, the museum may one day find itself struggling to fit acts like N.W.A. and Pavement into one induction ceremony. There really isn't one definition of what makes a song or band "rock" anymore. There is just music we like, songs that make us feel good. Those first few bars of "Jailhouse Rock" - those three slow ba-dum, ba-dums, followed by some of the best sing-shouting ever recorded - make that track...

Toward the end of last season, Mosley and the teams finally compromised on something called a Resource Restriction Agreement that takes effect this season. It isn't a cap, but it clamps down on runaway costs like wind tunnels and in-season testing. The big teams can still outspend their smaller rivals on, say, computer simulations, but just about everything in F1 is downsizing. It's now possible to field a respectable team, if not a winning one, for $100 million a season. New FIA president, former Ferrari manager Jean Todt, has pledged to bring costs down further...

Ecclestone alone makes the big TV, sponsorship and track deals that keep F1's cash gushing. He rests his legacy on the numbers, and they are indeed impressive, not least his own. Forbes latest tally puts his personal fortune at $3.7 billion. Ecclestone turns 80 this season, but he isn't going anywhere. "I do what I do and I'll keep doing it as long as I can deliver," he says. "When I can't, I'll hang it up." (See pictures from the Detroit motor show...

Iran is the 21st century equivalent of 1930s Russia - a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma. The Iranians haven't stumbled upon this mystifying state coincidentally, and the enigma isn't the result of outsiders' failure to try to understand them. Rather, the Iranian government has a deliberate policy aimed at confusing the outside world about its goals and decision-making processes. "There is an intention out there to confuse," a noted Iranian professor told me in Tehran a few years ago. The rulers in Tehran think that opacity and the perception of unpredictability buy them security...
