Ultimately, that is what's at stake. Environmentalists may be justified in arguing that a little bit of extra oil simply isn't worth the risks of drilling in vulnerable coastal ecosystems in the Atlantic and the Arctic. But unless we find a way to break our addiction to oil and develop viable, scaled-up energy alternatives, we'll be fighting this same battle over and over again. If environmentalists block oil exploration in the U.S., we'll look for it elsewhere - perhaps in the eastern Amazon, where much of the rain forest is already under oil and gas leases...
...Atlantic bluefin tuna, Thunnus thynnus, is a big fish, weighing up to 1,000 lb (450 kg). It's been around for more than 400 million years, which means it is older than the trees, older than the Himalayas, older than the Atlantic Ocean itself. The species isn't cute. Its expressionless eyes show neither pain nor curiosity, and it doesn't do tricks at aquariums. But it tastes really, really good, and it's on the verge of becoming extinct. Already depleted from overfishing, stocks are down 60% just over the past decade, and the species might be gone...
...small sacrifice. Refusing to eat bluefin tuna isn't one of those empty gestures, like a celebrity wearing a relief-aid ribbon on a $12,000 couture gown. The reason bluefin became the go-to fish for chefs from Tokyo to Tampa is that it tastes so good - and more important, from the point of view of restaurant owners, because it looks so good. What self-respecting sushi restaurant would be caught without a thick ruby slab of tuna under its sneeze guard? How would unimaginative hotel chefs provide their guests with poolside tartare platters if they couldn...
...isn't the only advice Pacquiao has ignored. His first love is boxing, but cockfighting and high-stakes gambling - preferably both at the same time - come a close second. Singson warns that gambling will drain Pacquiao's fortune and besmirch his populist image. "I told him, 'People look at you as their idol. It's bad if they see you gambling.' So now he's stopped [going to] casinos already." Really? Less than two days after his homecoming, the boxer could be spotted playing Texas Hold'em at a windowless poker joint in Manila in the small hours. Peering protectively...
Many feel the Census also needs to fine-tune its idea of what is and isn't Hispanic. It tends to define Latin America as just the Spanish-speaking countries of the western hemisphere, when the term also encompasses Portuguese-speaking Brazil. It also includes Spaniards in the "Hispanic Origins" box, when in fact a Spaniard is a European, not a Hispanic...
