U.S. official delivers Carter message to Begin outlining U.S. views on Jerusalem, rejecting Israel's claim that East Jerusalem, seized in 1967, is part of Israel. Begin blows up. He hands back letter, declaring: "I'd rather cut off my right hand than sign that." Carter decides to postpone all reference to Jerusalem. The outcome is now up to Egypt.
