Quail Stuffers. To fatten quail for market, Italian and Polish gaveurs (bird stuffers) work in Paris market-hall cellars, chewing up grain and fruit into a pap which they let the quail eat from their mouths. The pecking quail abrade the gaveurs' lips, noses, chins. The peckmarks become infected, ulcerated; the gaveurs are miserable, sometimes die. ... ...question of official languages must also come up, and that is a point on which the small nations are insistent German, French, Spanish Italian and Polish are the languages spoken by the largest number of individuals. Presumably, Hungarians and Bulgarians and Latvians, if they wished to influence their colleagues, would have to address the houses in some language that is not understood in their own bailiwick...

The Philadelphia Civic Opera, under Conductor Alexander Smallens, gave Prince Igor in Russian with a Russian cast and ballet. The Pennsylvania Grand Opera gave Boito's Mefistofele in Italian. Most interesting to watch this year will be the Philadelphia Grand Opera, which begins its first season in cooperation with Mrs. Edward Bok's Curtis Institute of Music...
