Professor de Gubernatis graduated from the University of Turin, and in 1860 became professor of rhetoric in the Gymnasium of Chieri. In 1862 he was sent to Berlin by the Italian government to study under Professors Bopp and Weber. He became professor of Sanskrit and comparative literature at the University of Florence in 1863, and has been professor of Italian literature at the University of Rome since 1891.
