...easier than ever to unload that old camera on eBay. Sellers can drop off an item at any of UPS's 3,400 stores in the continental U.S., and it is shipped to the California-based AuctionDrop. As long as the product weighs less than 25 lbs. and has an eBay value of at least $75, the middleman will handle everything from pricing to shipping. AuctionDrop's commission is up to 38%, which may sound steep, but the deal's still more profitable than collecting dust...
Every summer, style setters from Malibu to Montauk tend to obsess over a singular fashion item. This season the must-have look is the poncho--preferably in a loose wool knit with funky fringe (never mind that it's 90 outside). Designers like Michael Kors featured them for fall, left, and celebs like Keira Knightley have already been spotted sporting the '70s style. All that's missing are the moccasins. --By Kate Betts
...Princess in Misery The notebook item "Princess Diaries" [June 21] said that Japan's Crown Princess Masako is "utterly miserable," possibly because she is not allowed to take advantage of her career experience. When Masako married Crown Prince Naruhito, I was so happy. I admired him for having waited for Masako for six years. It must have been true love. The imperial marriage was a good model for Japanese young people. I wish the Imperial Household Agency [the ultra-traditional overseer of the activities of Japan's royal family] would change, so that the Harvard-educated princess, who worked...
...PandaMonium I was glad to learn that there are more giant pandas in the wild than previously thought [June 21]. But I was disappointed by the lead sentence in your item, which noted, "China's environmental policies are rarely worth celebrating." China has signed a number of international animal-protection treaties, and more environmental-protection laws are being created in that country. Although it is true that China has pollution problems, it is unfair to denigrate the nation's environmental policies with such blanket criticism. Frank Yuan Swansea, England...
Your notebook item "Reagan Bills? Not Yet" [June 21], reported on ways congressional Republicans are exploring to honor the late President. Your illustration with a picture of Ronald Reagan on the $10 bill made me recoil physically. On second thought, however, it is probably fitting to commemorate his life with his picture on money, considering the era of greed he presided over. It's much more appropriate than naming an airport after him, which only added insult to the injury he did when he fired striking air-traffic controllers. JOYCE D. MEYER Champaign...
